The Rhone-Alpes region, centred on the city of Lyon, is one of the strong European region
with a population (5.7 million) and a GDP fast higher than the EU average. Lyon is the
second economic area in France in term of enterprise and research with 9500 industrial
companies, 22 000 services companies, 10 000 researchers and 120 000 students.
Lyon and Rhone-Alpes have developed a first class know-how in the following areas:

- Physics, fine and molecular chemicals, catalysis and process engineering
- Information technology and networks, high technologies (laser and plasma, waves, sensors, electronic components, nano-technologies)

Since 2000 Rhone Alpes region and Lyon Chamber of Commerce are working on Cluster Initiative Policy
and have carried out several regional cluster mapping and cluster initiatives on different fields,

- Diagnostic and Health - Biotechnologies

- Nano-technologies
- Nuclear
- Mountain industries
- Renewable energies

All the territorial institutions (e.g. Regional Government, Chamber of Commerce, Cities) take part
to the different clusters and their animation, depending on their own know-how on the strategic
action lines engaged. Particular attention is put on initiative dynamics, follow up of enterprise
and measure indicators.
